IAEA to issue final assessment on Iran’s alleged nuclear weapon program
Iran has called for a balanced and impartial final assessment from the International Atomic Energy Agency. Suggesting some questions remain unanswered, he described his report as a “jigsaw puzzle” for which his agency has “pieces”.
Diplomats have said for weeks that they do not expect the report to be clear-cut, which Amano also confirmed on Thursday, Reuters reported.
“This is not an issue which can be answered “yes” or ‘no”.
Iran maintains that the claims are based on faulty intelligence provided by its enemies to IAEA, and that all its nuclear activities are exclusively for peaceful uses.
A senior United Nations official in charge of the probe into Iran’s nuclear program said that he would provide a final report on the issue by next week, but warned he could not guarantee that Tehran’s greatly reduced program was meant completely for peaceful purposes.
Technically, Iran cleared the crucial hurdle towards sanctions relief with respect to the PMD file on October 15, when it provided the agency with enough data to allow the written assessment.
“The Agency is conducting preparatory activities related to the verification and monitoring of Iran’s nuclear-related commitments under the JCPOA, including verification and monitoring of the steps Iran has begun taking towards the implementation of those commitments. A wrap-up technical meeting took place between Iran and the Agency on November 24th”, he added.
Under the nuclear deal, Iran has agreed to scale back its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of crippling worldwide economic sanctions.
Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), has predicted that the outcome of the IAEA’s investigation into the possible military dimensions (PMD) toTehran’s nuclear program will be in his country’s favor.
