ICE arrests immigrant after she speaks at press conference
Those who have overstayed under that program aren’t legally entitled to a court appearance unless they came to the U.S.to apply for asylum.
“It could happen this week, it could take a little longer so we’re trying hard to get her a hearing”, Peterson said.
A 22-year-old who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials early Wednesday, moments after giving a speech at an immigration press conference, has filed to stop her deportation, which was scheduled to occur without a hearing.
If Vargas is not considered as a “visa overstay”, then immigration officials would have to look at the whole picture, which as Peterson said, “she is about to be approved for DACA”. Vargas was saving money to go to school and achieve her dream of becoming a math professor. She paid taxes. Her supervisor, Xavier McLin, said Vargas had two additional jobs as well as her job at Freshii.
Her father and brother are in an ICE detention facility in Louisiana, awaiting deportation. “Then they made a decision to break into the house and confront her”.
Previously, Vargas and her family were allowed to stay under a visa waiver program but only for 90 days.
The presentation will come in the context of this past Tuesday’s arrest and this past Wednesday’s release of Edwin Romero, 25, a University of Texas at Dallas student held by Richardson police in conjunction with an ICE hold request, despite having Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status.
“This is in direct contradiction to the statement released by ICE that Daniela would be given an opportunity to present her case to a federal immigration judge”, Peterson said Friday. She reapplied in 2014 and was granted renewal.
The waiver program, which once entitled Argentines to stay in the US for up to 90 days without a visa, required them to waive rights to a hearing before a judge if they overstayed, Goldman said. The memos instruct to give those with criminal records the highest priority but make it clear to arrest and deport all undocumented people they encounter. She has no unpaid tickets.
“President Donald Trump recently suggested he may be open to reforming the United States immigration system, but his enforcement memos indicate no interest in creating a more reasonable and humane system”, said Grace Meng, senior USA researcher at Human Rights Watch.
As sheriff, I operate a jail and I will continue to cooperate with Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents when it comes to ICE placing detainers on illegal aliens who are incarcerated. “ICE does not conduct sweeps or raids that target aliens indiscriminately”.
As agents arrived, Vargas had an issue with her DACA status that expired.
“During that time, I couldn’t even breathe, honestly”, she said. Advocates are urging people with DACA to not let it lapse, and to not speak out publicly about their immigration statuses.
The news conference was organized by attorneys, church groups and the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance to bring attention to recent immigration raids in the region, said Patricia Ice, an attorney with the immigrant-rights group.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, said he’s seeking information about her case from the Department of Homeland Security.
Another DREAMer, Daniel Ramirez Medina, was arrested by immigration agents last month.
In previous years, the USA has deported around 450,000 illegal immigrants per year.
Josue Romero, who is covered under DACA, was arrested, too – taken into custody on Valentine’s Day a Class B misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession on in San Antonio, CBS affiliate KENS reported.
This contradicts President Donald Trump’s own directives, which showed his “soft spot” for the young undocumented immigrants known as Dreamers.
At a mid-February press conference, he was asked about his plans regarding the DACA program. “You know who we are and you know why we’re here”, they said, according to Jordan Sanders, Vargas’s friend who was in the vehicle at the time. I didn’t know. I didn’t know anything.
“Once people understand what we do and why we do it, I think the adversity will decrease”, Homan said.
“Everyone that is here illegally is subject to removal”, Spicer said.
This is a result of Trump’s executive order to “take the shackles off ICE officers”, as White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer put it, and it has given the agency more leeway to carry out its operations. But don’t just round up everybody and say all immigrants are criminals. Why that would prove to be a burden to anyone who wants to live and work in the United States is a mystery.
