Idris Elba makes history with double win at 2016 SAG awards

While his win for “Luther” in the TV Movie/Miniseries category wasn’t that surprising, combined with his film win, it proved to be a great night for Elba.

The actor, who was snubbed for an Oscar nomination this year, took home two gongs at the ceremony before taking a swipe at the contraversy.

Other winners include Viola Davis who won a Outstanding Female Actor in a Drama Series trophy for How to Get Away With Murder and Uzo Aruba for Outstanding Female Actor in a Comedy Series for Orange Is the New Black.

The event was being closely watched as Hollywood reels from a fierce backlash over the Academy Awards nominations, in which all the acting nominees were white. Thus, his two SAG wins are definitely a huge accomplishment, giving him an appropriate nod of success.

Since then, the organisation behind the awards has promised to double the number of female and minority members, a move welcomed by leading actors.

“We made a film about real people and real lives”, Elba said in his acceptance speech at the Shrine Auditorium.

Downton Abbey, Spotlight, and Orange Is the New Black won the ensemble awards, but diversity was the night’s big victor, especially in the wake of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron-starrer “Mad Max: Fury Road”, which is nominated in 10 categories (second highest) at this year’s Oscars, won the award for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

At this year’s SAG Awards, held January 30th, Leonardo DiCaprio won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for “The Revenant“. She’s 0-3 with SAG Award noms to date.

Her co-star, Aduba, was the victor for best actress in a TV comedy for her role in the Netflix prison series.

Idris Elba is on a roll.

Neither Elba nor Latifah were nominated for an Academy Award, while Straight Outta Compton’s lone nomination is for Best Original Screenplay.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey presented Carol Burnett with the Lifetime Achievement SAG Award.

Alicia Vikander won the SAG Award for her supporting actress role in “The Danish Girl“.

On top of that, Jeffrey Tambor took home the award for Actor for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of trans woman Maura Pfefferman in Amazon show Transparent.
