Idris Elba triumphs at SAG Awards, taking home two trophies
There were no surprises in the Best Actor category as Leonardo DiCaprio got his hands on the first Screen Actors Guild Award of his career for his performance in The Revenant.
The event was being closely watched as Hollywood reels from a fierce backlash over the Academy Awards nominations, in which all the acting nominees were white. Thus, his two SAG wins are definitely a huge accomplishment, giving him an appropriate nod of success.
On Saturday night, Hollywood’s glitterati gathered at the 22nd annual Screen Actors’ Guild Awards and what a diverse night it turned out to be.
British actor Idris Elba, who picked up two awards for his roles in TV series Luther and the film Beasts of No Nation expressed gratitude in his acceptance speech and said: “Two awards – I don’t know what to say”.
That was good news for the night’s best actor victor Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”) and best actress victor Brie Larson (“Room“), who seemed to cement their status as Oscar favorites. Stallone has won the Golden Globe and Critics Choice and is well on his way to Oscar Gold.
In the above video, Elba recognizes the weight of Beasts of No Nation, which was set in war-torn West Africa. Though the actor had multiple SAG nominations over the years, his first win at the starry event was a flawless moment of joy and ecstasy!
Jeffrey Tambor won best comedy actor for playing Maura Pfefferman, an ageing wealthy transgender woman in Amazon’s Transparent.
SAG Awards are the only ceremony where actors vote for the year’s best performances in movies and television.
The TV series also won for the second consecutive year for best comedy ensemble.
“Spotlight” took home the top prize of the night: outstanding performance by an ensemble cast.
Alicia Vikander also solidified her position as the Oscar front-runner for Best Supporting Actress after winning the SAG.

Meanwhile, Priyanka, who flaunted a pink off-shoulder gown at the awards, presented the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series to Kevin Spacey for “House of Cards“.
