Trump and running mate Mike Pence gave their first joint interview Saturday to the CBS News magazine at Trump’s home in NY.
Yet the real estate mogul was unfazed by the apparent fault lines between the two men, claiming that he and Pence were close during the Republican primaries, even though Pence endorsed Trump’s primary season rival, Sen.
Those words from Indiana Gov. Mike Pence marked the official debut of the Trump-Pence presidential ticket.
In the excerpt, CBS News’ Lesley Stahl asked about a essay Pence wrote in which he said that negative campaigning was wrong.
“A campaign ought to demonstrate the basic human decency of the candidate”, Pence wrote.
“But she’s not?” Stahl asked, referencing Clinton. “And I also know this good man would listen, and has the leadership qualities to draw from the people around him”.
“Hillary’s foreign policy helped launch ISIS”, Trump said. “And this campaign, and Donald Trump’s candidacy, has been about the issues the American people care about”.
During the 24 hours since Trump announced his decision on Twitter, notable GOP (Grand Old Party) politicians praised the decision, calling Pence as strong on conservative, social and economic principles, including a staunch record of anti-abortion and anti-LGBT policies.
Still, Trump insisted that Pence voted to authorize the USA invasion of Iraq because he, like others, were “misled”.
And Pence has criticized Trump’s proposed banning of Muslims from entering the United States.
“The fact of the matter is that when they (Democrats) take a sigh of relief that their nominee wasn’t indicted three weeks before their national convention, you understand how low the Democratic Party has sunk”, he said.
Trump asserted that he would handle attacks against his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton and leave Pence out of them. Trump says he opposed the war from the start.
