IFC has already renewed Documentary Now! for 2 seasons
To garner initial buzz for the series, which has been in production for two years, IFC is streaming the second episode of Documentary Now! . Fred Armisen and Bill Hader serve as producers (along with Seth Meyers) and performers, but despite the occasional chuckle, the jokes seem too inside for their own good.
Seth Meyers, Bill Hader, and Fred Armisen stopped by the Today Show and talked with Matt Lauer about a new IFC series that they created.
Even given the occasional raised profile of documentary film, as when “The Jinx” took over the world recently, there is something unlikely about this show – a show for geeks, by geeks.
Three episodes were offered for review, two of which have already been made available online. Starring Armisen and Hader, each episode is shot in a different style of documentary film making and honors some of the most important stories that never actually happened-because why not? To date, it’s garnered more than 250,000 views across all platforms. It has all the usual documentary trappings, including Errol Morris-like reenactments and grainy footage of weirdos a la the Maysles Brothers. The series is hosted by Helen Mirren who introduces the documentary of the week. The show also features appearances by Jack Black, John Slattery, iconic music manager Irving Azoff and SNL’s Aidy Bryant, Mike O’Brien, Paula Pell and Time Robinson. Hader and Armisen also performed as faux-soft rock duo Blue Jean Committee, and you can check out their rather earnest performance below.
Documentary Now! is produced by Broadway Video and executive produced by Lorne Michaels.
