IISc, IIT (Delhi) among world’s top 200 institutes
While IIT Delhi has gone up from rank 235 a year ago, it is the first time that IISc Bangalore has featured on the list. The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru has bagged the 147th spot on the list whereas Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi has been ranked 179 this year. India has made its debut in the top 200 of the Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) World University rankings 2015/16 rankings.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained the top spot for the fourth consecutive year. London is the only city in the world with four universities in the top 50. The Harvard University of U.S. and the University of Cambridge of United Kingdom occupied the second and third places respectively.
Two Indian institutes have made a breakthrough for the first time in history to make it into the top 200 lists of world’s best universities. In the field of Arts and Humanities, Jawaharlal Nehru University leads the Indian universities at the 168th position. University of Delhi and the University of Mumbai have lost their ranks due to the normalization by faculty applied to the research indicator but also due to deterioration in other dimensions as well.
“What India should probably focus on, is having its universities focus on fostering global citizens with leadership potential, whilst maintaining its strengths in research in engineering, technology and natural sciences”.
Thirty-four countries are represented in the top 200 with the U.S. being the dominant nation, with 49 institutions, ahead of the United Kingdom (30), the Netherlands (12), Germany (11), Canada, Australia, and Japan (8), China (7), France, Sweden and Hong Kong (5).
