Image Awards open with rap on diversity snubs of other shows

In the TV comedy categories, host Anthony’s sitcom Black-ish swept the board, with the 45-year-old winning for outstanding actor, while the show was selected as outstanding comedy series and his co-star Tracee Ellis Ross, daughter of Motown legend Diana Ross, picked up outstanding actress.

Anthony Anderson addressed #OscarsSoWhite early on at the 47th annual NAACP Image Awards show Friday night.

While he called out the Academy Awards, Anderson also jokingly expressed concerns that they might go to far in nominations next year to compensate for the issues this year. “I just hope they don’t go overboard next year and nominate too much black stuff out of guilt”, Anderson said.

The event kicked off tonight in Pasadena, California at the Civic Auditorium as NAACP honored outstanding people of color in art and entertainment from film and television as well as books and music. “Come back to the black people”.

“Despite the daunting problems, I am hopeful that our generation will demand and achieve radical change in our lifetime”, said Legend after he performed “All of Me”. Fighting for justice isn’t an act of hate, it’s an act of love. He added: “Let’s not waste it”.

Creed was the clear victor, taking home wins for best actor (Michael B. Jordan), Best Director (Ryan Coogler), Best Supporting Actress (Phylicia Rashad), and Best Writing.

Viola was additionally nominated at the ceremony for Outstanding Actress In A Motion Picture for Lila And Eve, but lost out to Sanaa Lathan for The Perfect Guy.

The “Empire” star tore it up accepting her award for outstanding actress in a drama series.
