US and South Korean officials say THAAD only targets North Korea, but China and Russian Federation suspect it could also help USA radars detect their own missiles.
The United States’ new measures were taken in conjunction with the State Department’s issuance of a report entitled “Serious Human Rights Abuses or Censorship in North Korea”, which was mandated by the U.S. Congress under the North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act, passed earlier this year.
In March North Korea sentenced University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier to 15 years of hard labor after detaining him in January. According to Reuters, however, North Korea has indicated in the past that wartime laws would mean that detainees will not be released on humanitarian grounds. “It is the unwavering will of our army to deal a ruthless retaliatory strike and turn [the South] into a sea of fire and a pile of ashes the moment we have an order to carry it out”.
“North Korea notified the US that it should take responsibility for disastrous events which could take place”, it reported.
China and Russian Federation also have expressed strong opposition to the deployment of THAAD. Otherwise, he said, it would face “decisive and strong punishment from our military”.
