Imran Farooq Murder Case: Key Accused Record Confessional Statements
Following the confessional statements of two main suspects of Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s leader Dr Imran Farooq’s murder case before the court, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has chose to seek arrest warrants for the three other accused of the case, including MQM chief Altaf Hussain.
The move comes after two assassins, Mohsin Ali and Khalid Shamim, confessed to killing Dr Imran Farooq on the directions of Muhammad Anwar in London. He also revealed that the funding for the assassination was also provided by them.
He said his accomplice Kashif was ordered by the top leadership of the party to get rid of Farooq.
On June 18, 2015, the Frontier Corps claimed to have arrested Mohsin and Shamim in Chaman in Balochistan.
In the statement, Mohsin said that Moazzam had processed his visa and prepared travel documents.
Shamim said that he had consented to join the murder plot because he was a diehard MQM activist, sources said.
Mohsin also confessed his involvement in the Farooq’s murder.
The magistrate asked Shamim that if there is any pressure on him to make the confessional statement and he replied in negative.
The gruesome murder took place on Sept 16, 2010, near Dr Farooq’s London home.
The case has been registered under sections 302, 34, 109, 120B of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. The clauses of conspiracy, assistance, abetment and assassination/murder have also been incorporated in the FIR.
According to sources, the FIA has made a decision to secure warrants for the arrest of Altaf Hussain, Iftikhar Hussain and Muhammad Anwar.
After the confessions, both suspects were presented in the Anti Terrorism Court (ATC).
In a statement issued late on Thursday, the MQM clarified that no member of the party was involved in Imran Farooq’s murder.
“MQM is aware of reports in the Pakistani media that individuals held in detention by Pakistani authorities have allegedly confessed to the murder of Dr Imran Farooq”.
