In front of Beyonce, Serena Williams not happy with Open win
Serena Williams returns a shot to Vania King during the second round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, in NY.
In his post-match interview, del Potro said: “This crowd, this stadium, this atmosphere is incredible”.
The longest U.S. Open women’s match went 3:16, when Sam Stosur beat Nadia Petrova in three sets in the third round in 2011.
Organizers used the roof – build at a cost of $150 million – for the first time in tournament history in Wednesday’s night session but it proved especially beneficial Thursday after rain hit NY in the morning and afternoon.
Only Roger Federer, with 307, has won more Grand Slam matches than Williams in the Open era, which dates to 1968.
Once again, Goerges was trying to be aggressive coming forward, and a stunning running forehand victor cross court sealed the opening set for the two-time US Open champion with a 6-2 in 33 minutes. “I knew at Wimbledon that I wanted to get there”. On a rainy morning, the new roof was closed at the start of a match for the first time after it made its debut in the middle of Rafael Nadal’s win Wednesday night.
Williams took care of her own serve easily. She smacked seven return winners.
But Vinci prevailed on the back of 40 winners and will meet Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine for a quarter-final place. He’s had four tour wins and a run to the French Open semifinals this year.
“Usually when people are there, I try to play better, especially if they’re famous and they’re doing so great at their job”, Williams said.
Halep will play Hungary’s Timea Babos in the third round.
Halep threw down, and apparently cracked, her racket after losing a point late in the final set.
Halep, a semifinalist at Flushing Meadows a year ago, rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the deciding set and appeared to struggle with the power of the big-serving Hungarian, who blasted five aces and 25 total winners.
Halep said in her on-court interview that she liked the calm conditions of playing indoors but she was “a little bit cold”.
It’s not simply that it’s an unfamiliar soundtrack for a Grand Slam match. “I just remember getting real comfortable by the time I lost the first set [7-5]”.
In Round 3, Williams will play Johanna Larsson, who swept Denisa Allertova in straight sets earlier Friday.
The American got the break by Goerges’ attempt to come to the net as she was being completely outplayed from the baseline, and unfortunately her forehand hit the net cord and dropped outside of the line to give Williams the 3-1 lead.
1 seed and Venus is No. 6, the first time she’s been seeded in the top 10 since 2010.
Andy Murray continued his routine progression at the US Open after beating Marcel Granollers in the second round.
On the men’s side, No 2-seed and 2012 champion Andy Murray plays in the afternoon in Ashe against 40th-ranked Paolo Lorenzi.
However, two first serves from Williams drew errors from Goerges’ racquet to get the game back at deuce, and the American created her first match point with an unreturnable service victor. In the nightcap in Ashe, 14th-seeded Nick Kyrgios gets his chance on center stage, facing 63rd-ranked Illya Marchenko of Ukraine.
Joining him in round three were third seed Stan Wawrinka and Olympic finalist Juan Martin del Potro, who beat Steve Johnson.
Players will face cloudy skies and the coolest weather of the tournament so far, with highs only in the mid-70s.
