In Major Shift, Trump May Legalize Millions of Illegal Immigrants
President Trump is set to address Congress Tuesday night, for the first time since being in office.
The meeting alternated between portions being off the record and parts attributable to senior White House officials without using their names, a practice the administration has criticized on stories they disapprove of.
More longer-term restrictions to immigration mean the US economy could suffer from an even greater slide in workforce growth and productivity, Daan Struyven, an economist with Goldman Sachs Group Inc., wrote in a February 15 research note.
If Trump were willing to work for such a prize, it’s totally plausible he could achieve it. He told senators as recently as two weeks ago that they should revive the 2013 proposal that died in the House.
In regards to fighting crime, Trump mentioned that he has ordered “the Department of Justice is going to form a task force on reducing violent crime”.
“It’s a very hard thing for me because, you know, I love these kids”.
Trump said it was essential to “break the cycle of poverty” by also breaking “the cycle of violence”.
“I’m not shocked that the president said that”, Himes said. So what is VOICE and how does Homeland Security fit into it?
Republican legislators responded with vigorous clapping as Trump moved on. The standard could apply to virtually any one of the estimated 11 million people in the country illegally.
If Trump calls for immigration reform, he could face opposition not only from his core supporters but also allies inside the White House.
“Those priorities have not changed”, said Ms. Sanders.
“It’s not something I would take to the bank”, said Angela Kelley, an immigration expert at the Open Society Policy Center. That order was blocked by federal courts, but the president is expected to sign a new, revised version of the ban as early as Wednesday. Yet such coverage masks not just the reality that immigrants are less prone to crime than natives but also that so-called Sanctuary Cities, in which police only inquire about a person’s legal status when given a warrant by immmigration agents, are safer than comparably sized cities. “This is not acceptable in our society”, Trump said to applause.
During his speech, Mr Trump announced that he had launched a new agency that would compile list of all immigrants who had committed crimes – apparently whether or not they are in the country illegally. “If this president proposes… when it comes to the DREAMERs, the young people brought here as children, he wants to legalize them, that would be the starting point”. CNN, the president’s most reviled network, says: “Trump envisions bill allowing many immigrants to stay in United States”.
