In wake of cousin’s fatal shooting, Dwyane Wade speaks out
Investigators say she was not the intended target, but are looking into the possibility that the young mother was struck as she walked near an unfolding robbery, according to a Chicago police spokesman.
Others point to a loss of trust between police and the community, a long-standing problem that grew worse after Chicago police released a squad-car video in November that showed a white police officer fatally shooting a black teenager 16 times. During the ESPN Town Hall meeting, Wade said of gun violence: “It’s deep-rooted”. 4 kids lost their mom for NO REASON.
Police are investigating whether National Basketball Association star Dwyane Wade’s cousin was hit by a stray bullet during a robbery on a Chicago street.
Numerous neighborhoods on the city’s South and West sides where the violence is concentrated struggle with gang membership and high unemployment and poverty rates. This July alone, there were 65 homicides – the most that month since 2006.
Wade also tweeted Saturday morning: “The city of Chicago is hurting”.
Wade wasn’t the only one to tweet about Ms Aldridge’s death. We need more help & more hands on deck.
“Over the past three decades I have seen up close the dedication of the law enforcement officers who protect me and my family”.
“These young kids are screaming for help!”
“We’re still going to try and help these people to transform their minds and give them a different direction, so this thing won’t keep happening”, she said.
Trump used the tragedy to again pitch himself to African-American voters, citing Abraham Lincoln and saying, “Nothing means more to me than working to make our party the home of the African-American vote once again”. His nephew, Darin Johnson, was shot twice in the leg on the South Side in 2012 but recovered. Its murder rate is higher than the more populous cities of NY and Los Angeles.
But people such as movie star Don Cheadle weren’t having any part of Trump’s initial tweet, the one that was spelled correctly, and a final one four hours later expressing condolences for the death. He first posted, “Dwyane Wade’s cousin was just shot and killed walking her baby in Chicago”. “Just what I’ve been saying”.
Trump has been working in recent days to boost his appeal among African-American voters declaring last week that he could win 95 percent of the black vote at the end of his first term in office, if he is elected.
As we reported earlier, Aldridge, 32, was shot and killed while pushing her baby in a stroller approximately a mile and half west of the University of Chicago.
The victims included a 6-year-old girl who was drawing with sidewalk chalk when she was shot in the back with a bullet intended for rival gang members.
