Inciarte’s 2 HRs, 4 hits lead Diamondbacks over Padres
For Sunday’s game the padres start James Shields who has allowed 180 hits and 84 earned runs while striking out 208 over 196 innings for a 13-6 record and a 3.86 ERA.
“I was really excited to face him”, said Inciarte. Three more home runs in his last Petco Park start of the season, however, pushed that season sum to 33 allowed and provided all the runs the Diamondbacks needed in a 4-2 win in front of 27,115.
“The pitch to Peralta was probably off the plate a little bit”, Shields said. “They pitched very well today, they hit in the clutch and that wins ballgames”.
Arizona Diamondbacks’ Socrates Brito, left, congratulates Ender… “He took it as a real challenge”. San Diego is 2-1 on its nine-game stretch at Petco Park after taking two of three from San Francisco.
David Peralta burned him for a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was the left fielder’s 17th homer of the season. In the first inning, the D-Backs scored two early runs on RBIs from A.J. Pollock and Paul Goldschmidt to make it 2-0.
Shields surrendered at least three home runs in an outing for the third time this year.
Right-hander Jhoulys Chacin (2-0) got the win in his first relief appearance of the season. He was followed by Daniel Hudson who then gave way to Brad Ziegler. The Padres right-hander has benefited from the late-season run support, while the Arizona Diamondbacks have already fallen on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Shields got the Padres’ rally started by doubling with one-out on a drive that landed on the warning track in left-center. Gyorko hit a sacrifice fly to right fielder Inciarte, Kemp scored, Upton to third.
“Spangy and Travis both played the game the right way offensively and defensively”, said Padres interim manager Pat Murphy.
So Godley started but only lasted three innings, gave up no runs and struck out three. While 26 of this year’s gifts have come with the bases empty, Shields has allowed three or more homers in a game four times this season, with the last of Sunday’s long-balls again giving the Diamondbacks a lead after Shields spearheaded his offense’s counter-strike.
The Padres threatened several times in the second.
San Diego Padres’ Cory Spangenberg (15) slides into second safely with a double as Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Chris Owings, right, misses the ball from the outfield during the third inning of a baseball game in San Diego, Saturday, September 26, 2015. He struck out five and walked two. Kelly hit Brandon Drury with a pitch leading off the inning and allowed singles to Ender Inciarte and Phil Gosselin before Pollock hit his slam an estimated 427 feet to straightaway center field.
NOTES: The Padres won the season series 10-9, although the Diamondbacks won this series to retain third place in the National League West…
Diamondbacks: SS Nick Ahmed missed his fifth straight game with a lower back strain. It was his 27th straight save, the longest active streak in the majors. Myers walked as a pinch-hitter in the seventh.
