India beat England in second Test by 246 runs
But Broad is still confident the tourists can deny India’s bowlers on a wearing final-day pitch to pull off a famous draw.
Despite losing that vital wicket, Broad remained upbeat about England’s chances of survival.
Virat Kohli accumulated for 248 runs as England went down by 246 runs in the second Test match at Vishakhapatnam. Conceding the 200-run lead proved crucial.
India were all out for 204 runs in their second innings on the fourth day, setting a victory target of 405 runs for England.
Vizag: After wrapping up India for just above 204 and getting nearly a day-and-a-half to bat to survive the match, Alastair Cook and H Hammed showed up brilliant resistance and fight back.
“When it comes to Test cricket as a team we are prepared to be in a situation where we have to work hard for our wickets”, he added.
Though such a slow batting might have been boring for many, the English batsmen were winning, seeing off the India bowlers.
“England are a side we do not take for granted”. England’s best batsman had an early reprieve on nine when Kohli failed to hold a catch at leg slip off Ashwin.
Cook’s departure ended play for the day, with Joe Root undefeated on 5.
While Bairstow played some shots, wickets fell around him, with Adil Rashid (4) departing just before lunch – edging behind off an attempted upper-cut to Shami – and Zafar Ansari bowled by Ashwin for a duck in the second over after the interval. Root was however given out caught behind off Ashwin, but he immediately reviewed and the decision was overturned.
Hameed, who impressed on his debut with a well-made 82 in the second innings of the Rajkot Test, batted with grit during his 144-ball stay before being trapped leg before wicket by Ashwin with a delivery that kept low.
Kohli said that despite a crushing win, England can’t be taken lightly.
“It was a massive toss to lose but in certain periods of game we played some good cricket”.
“We need to win a couple of games to get ourselves back in the series”. But for a young guy to come in and have the vision to pick up wickets and tell me the field he wants and the lines he is going to bowl to get the batsman out.
Stuart Broad’s dedication: England fast bowler Stuart Broad was not in shape as he suffered hamstring in the first innings of the match.
With this victory, Virat Kohli remains undefeated in 15 Tests as India’s Test skipper. “Yes, definitely that’s why we play five bowlers, we don’t play only spinners, we play fast bowlers as well, because we understand their contribution is also important”, Kohli said. Virat Kohli and Co. were made to work hard, as they waited for nearly 100 overs in the 4th innings for the win. “Then it offered little bit more for the bowlers”. “Ben Duckett has probably worked harder than anyone else in the nets but it shows it is a long way between county cricket and Test cricket”.
“It’s been a lucky ground for me”.
Opener Alastair Cook and teenager Haseeb Hameed blocked nearly everything adding 75 runs in 50.2 overs but once they were dismissed, it became a walk in the park for the home team as they clinched the Test with a 246-run win. If we got to play 150-odd overs then we could have saved the game.
“We made a very clear policy. Everyone bought into it”.
The next new ball is 20 overs far. Then you think ‘why didn’t we start that right at the beginning?’
