India bowl out South Africa for 214
The Indian Spinners stole the show in the second India vs South Africa test match as they took eight wickets of South Africa.
De Villiers, 44 off 54 now, looked sublime amid chaos.
592 Runs by AB de Villiers in worldwide matches on South Africa’s current tour – the most any batsman from either side has made from the ten games played.
Kohli said at the toss that there was moisture inside the surface because of rain over the past week and that the pitch “will do something all day”.
South Africa had a horror star on day one of the second Test as their batsmen were found wanting against Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
The Indian total was in response to South Africa’s 214 all out after tea, as the openers Murali Vijay (28) and Shikhar Dhawan (45) safely negotiated a potentially tricky period until the close of play. The fans were backing de Villiers’ every move, chanting his name in a relentless voice of support that even no overseas batsman has likely received in India. Ashwin (2/21) and Varun Aaron (1/28) shared the spoils in the first session which belonged to the home team despite Elgar’s resolute fight and a few classy shots by De Villiers after Virat Kohli opted to field. India’s only chance is for them to get to 400 by the end of the fourth day and then bowl South Africa out on the final day, a task which while not impossible, will need an array of things falling their way.
Left-hander Van Zyl was trapped lbw with a straight delivery while du Plessis was dismissed three deliveries later with Cheteshwar Pujara taking a fine low catch at forward short leg which was confirmed by the third umpire after watching the replay several times. Vijay, who was dropped on 21 by Imran Tahir at square leg off Morne Morkel, had hit five fours. Meanwhile JP Duminy and Morne Morkel recovered from their injuries and came in for Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander, who suffered injuries.
Jadeja then struck the vital blow for India when he had De Villiers caught by keeper Wriddhiman Saha with Saha running around from behind the stumps to take a sharp one-handed grab. This pushed South Africa to a precarious stage of 45 for 3 after just 15 overs.
