India building collapse kills 11 near Mumbai
Thane: At least six people were killed and another 15 hurt when a residential building crashed here in Maharashtra early Tuesday, officials said.
There are over a dozen people feared to be trapped under the building’s debris.
Thane municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal, fire brigade team and NDRF team has reached the spot and rescue operations are on.
An eye-witness was quoted saying, “Around 2 am, I heard a loud noise”.
“Eleven bodies have been recovered and seven people pulled out alive”.
Thane Municipal Corporation had issued notices to residents of the Krishna Niwas building as it was in a dilapidated condition, officials said. Fifteen families were in the building at the time of the collapse. Some residents had vacated the building, but many others continued to reside in the building.
Shinde, who visited the spot, said, “The government will undertake a survey of dilapidated buildings in the area”.
It comes just a week after nine people were killed when another old three-storey building collapsed under heavy monsoon rains in the Mumbai suburb of Thakurli.
