India clinch South Africa Test series
“We’ve beaten the bat and given away the cheap single, and they haven’t”.
He also said his side did not take its chances and bowled India out cheaper than they did in the first innings. Harbhajan was the last Indian bowler to go past this landmark in 2008.
The stand between Amla and du Plessis is now of 51 runs. Amla and du Plessis weren’t grafting, they were battling and surviving.
Tahir’s fourth wicket came in weird circumstances as Wriddhimman Saha was caught by Amla attempting to sweep after the ball ricocheted off Dane Vilas’ boot. Ashwin has the ball.
“It’s a pleasure to have someone like Ashwin in the side”, Kohli said after the match.
Ashwin and Jadeja bowled in tandem to dry up the runs and South Africa managed only 17 runs in 19 overs.
He pointed out that like the South Africans, even Indian batsmen have struggled in this Test series.
WICKET! Big man goes. “So I can’t comment too much on the wickets and things like that, just leave it at that”. De Villiers’ is probably the quickest to move around in the crease but today he was being pushed around a lot more, particularly by Ashwin. He dismisses Dean Elgar to provide India first wicket of the morning. The ball rebounded off the pads for a simple catch by Cheteshwar Pujara at silly point. Fall of wickets: 1-17, 2-29, 3-40, 4-58, 5-130, 6-135, 7-164, 8-167, 9-177, 10-185.
Ravichandran Ashwin comes into attack. That would be the last success for India for a while.
Good first over by Ishant…
“I don’t feel that way, we have never complained when we had challenging conditions and won’t complain in the future either”. At one stage, South Africa had fallen to 12 for five before JP Duminy’s late-order heroics helped them through to a less embarrassing score.
Their match-winner was Ravi Ashwin whose figures of 7/66 in the second innings were a career best and these figures as well as his match figures of 12/98 were the best for India against South Africa.
Amla and du Plessis got together after Ashwin got two vital wickets before lunch.
No hundreds and only four fifties from two finished Tests begs the question if this series really is being played in run-friendly India.
The loss also ended South Africas enviable nine-year away record without a series defeat.
Left-hander Jean-Paul Duminy was the only one to offer any resistance, with 35 runs off 65 balls, with two sixes and one boundary.
South Africa’s 79 in the first innings was its lowest ever score against India. The previous lowest total against India in Tests was 82 by Sri Lanka in Chandigarh way back in 1990.
