India’s Tata Motors to rename hatchback that sounds like Zika
India’s biggest carmaker Tata Motors said Tuesday it would rename its new Zica hatchback as global alarm grows over an outbreak of the identical-sounding Zika virus.
Tata Motors, part of the Tata Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates, said it would decide on a new name for the hatchback after a few weeks.
The company said it was reviewing the name, short for “zippy car”, which now has unavoidable associations with a virus linked to serious birth defects and neurological problems. In view of the recent developments, we are now evaluating the situation.
The mosquito-borne virus has hit the headlines as the World Health Organisation (WHO) released a warning that the Zika virus was spreading and estimated that up to 4 million people across the Americas would be infected with the virus in the next year.
Tata’s marketing material for the Zica offers drivers the chance to “leave all worries miles behind without her/him even knowing it”.
The vehicle is to be shown for the first time on Wednesday at the Auto Expo 2016 on New Delhi’s outskirts.
Tata, the owner of Jaguar Land Rover, had already publicized and promoted the name, along with the model’s stylishness and “peppy driving experience”. Built to compete with cars such as the Hyundai i10 and Toyota Aygo, the Zica is a very important auto in Tata’s line-up.
Extensive research is put into the names of new cars.
