India v England, 2nd Test: England down but still in the fight
India has won the second match of the five-match test series against England by 246 runs.
1759 Partnership runs for England’s sixth wicket in Tests in 2016, the fourth highest by any team for a wicket in a calendar year.
Virat Kohli was declared the Man of the Match for scoring 248 runs in two innings of the second Test against England in Vizag.
The morning session was extended as India were nine wickets down.
Spinner Adil Rashid got the prize scalp of Kohli who was dismissed for 81. With eight wickets to win in 90 overs on a Day Five pitch with 318 more to defend, India may fancy their chances but it was a different case at the 50th over of England second innings when the visitors, in pursuit of 405, were 75 for no loss.
India finally managed to dismiss the big fish when Joe Root was trapped in front of the wicket.
Moeen Ali was the next to go, defending patiently to score a mere two runs off 31 balls before Jadeja induced an edge to Virat Kohli at backward short leg.
Stokes (6) was bowled by a beauty from Jayant that pitched on middle stump and turned past the allrounder’s defensive prod to bowl him, while Root fell lbw to Mohammed Shami (2-30); the decision confirmed on review. Two overs later, Jayant picked up two wickets in two balls to wrap up the England innings. Hameed was content to keep his end of the bargain through studied defence while Root showcased his wide repertoire of strokes, driving Shami and Umesh Yadav on both sides of the wicket and then taking on Ravindra Jadeja, even though by then, the indifferent bounce was beginning to express itself.
In the second over after Lunch, Ashwin got the wicket of Zafar Ansari as he was bowled by a spinning delivery. Catch live cricket score and live updates of India vs England 2nd Test here.
“We are happy with the way things went”, said Pujara.
Ashwin dismissed Hameed lbw in the 51st over to end the long opening stand. Hameed faced 144 deliveries for his 25 runs and hit three fours. Anderson completed his comeback Test with a king pair, remarkably the first by an England batsman for 110 years.
Duckett and Ansari will nearly certainly be dropped for the Third Test in Mohali on Saturday with Broad struggling to be fit because of his foot injury.
England’s stoic openers then broke no speed records but suffered no serious alarms on a pitch which had shown signs of deterioration – specifically uneven bounce – yet played few tricks in 28 overs up to tea, which yielded just three boundaries.
