Indiana GOP leaders nearing vote on Pence ballot replacement
Trump’s campaign and his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, are expected to hold a town hall event on Monday at the Hotel Roanoke & Convention Center.
Pence, a 1986 Indiana University School of Law graduate, has served as Indiana’s governor since January 2013. “I just made a habit of … coming out in harvest to get input from farmers and to see where we are”, he said.
Mr. Pence also added a dash of self-deprecating humour to an other otherwise grave address.
He emphasized the importance of winning the delegate-rich Keystone State, which has not gone for a GOP presidential candidate since 1988.
“That’s what you can do with common-sense Republican leadership”, he said. “And I am convinced what begins in Cleveland will end in the White House”.
Pence’s message went over well with the party faithful.
“Mike Pence is a good choice”, delegate William Springer of Sullivan said.
In a convention marked by the unconventional, Mike Pence made his mark Thursday night by sticking with a traditional script.
Indiana Republican Party Chairman Jeff Cardwell rallied delegates throughout the day.
Pence’s name isn’t popular around the country-something he’s aware of.
“I had one of the delegates tell me they had been involved in IN politics for 30 years and they said they have never seen anything even close to what we have been experiencing in the last week”, said Bassler. “Tonight, Donald Trump flatly contradicted him”, said the Hillary for America senior policy adviser Jake Sullivan. We all better think very carefully, very carefully about what this means for our Constitution and limited government.
Among Pence’s political accomplishments: Saying in 2001 that smoking doesn’t kill, decrying the secret political agenda of the Disney movie Mulan (to change minds about women in combat, naturally), and signing Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which allows businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ patrons. This is the first time in state history that the committee will determine their candidate for governor.
Ahead of the speech, IN delegates are sharing their state pride. “And they’re all being bombarded”.
Committee members Kyle Hupfer of Madison County and Nick Barbknecht of LaPorte County have also told The Associated Press they will support Holcomb in Tuesday’s vote. Even Pence’s facial expressions are pulled down and humble, he seems puzzled and concerned. Yes, it had the kind of bombshell we’ve come to expect from him when he speaks on this subject.
But Rokita and Brooks are still fighting to win the nomination as the gubernatorial candidate.
The committee will meet on July 26 to make the decision.
That’s a far cry from three weeks ago, when Dunn said he was out shooting sporting clays with Pence.
