Indianapolis Colts claim QB Charlie Whitehurst
The Indianapolis Colts claimed quarterback Charlie Whitehurst off waivers from the Tennessee Titans, the team announced Thursday. Coach Ken Whisenhunt helped bring Whitehurst to Tennessee to help teach Jake Locker, then Marcus Mariota his offense.
In 2014, Whitehurst was 105-185 passing for 1,326 yards with seven passing touchdowns and only two interceptions for a quarterback rating of 87.4.
The remainder of the games this year, he was on the sidelines, but was inactive. He was released Wednesday when the team activated running back David Cobb.
Cobb, the Titans fifth-round pick this season, is expected to fit somewhere in the running back rotation behind starter Antonio Andrews.
Collegiately, Whitehurst amassed the second-most wins in Clemson history with 25, including eight fourth-quarter comeback wins.
Cobb has gotten his weight down to 225 and is “lean and mean” and is ready to return to action.
The 33 year old has made 9 career starts, so if nothing else, he at least has proven starting experience. In 2014, Whitehurst started five games, including two against the Colts.
The 6-foot-3, 242-pound Greene, who also played at USC, was on the Bengals’ and Panthers’ practice squads last season and spent training camp this season with the Bears. Greene was a linebacker/defensive end for the majority of his college career at the University of Southern California, before moving to tight end as a senior.
