Indianapolis policeman shot by off-duty officer
An off-duty Indianapolis police officer shot a fellow officer and fled to Cincinnati, where he was later arrested, according to police.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Major Richard Riddle briefs the media on a domestic disturbance in which a detective was shot in the arm by another officer.
The injured investigator, a 20-year veteran of IMPD, was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in stable condition with an injury to his elbow and back. When police arrived the suspect was not on-scene.
Aurs was off-duty when he allegedly shot the detective and fled to OH in his personal vehicle.
The off-duty officer’s wife was not hurt in the incident. The investigator did return fire, but Aurs was not struck.
The off-duty officer fled the scene, but Riddle said he was tracked down in Cincinnati, Ohio, and taken into custody without incident. It was quickly determined that the suspect who shot the investigator was the involved officer from the earlier alleged domestic violence call.
Shortly before 2 a.m., Indianapolis police learned that Aurs was engaged in a standoff situation 100 miles away with Cincinnati police near the Brent Spence Bridge. It was during that on-duty officer’s investigation inside the apartment building, when Aurs entered the apartment and shot at the investigator, injuring him. Aurs has since been taken into custody by the CPD. On Monday evening, police shot and killed a man after they say he shot an officer. Aurs drove his personally owned vehicle and did not use his assigned police vehicle.
Aurs has been charged with attempted murder and authorities are now working to extradite him back to Indianapolis. “I don’t have those specific charges, we’ll work with the Prosecutor’s office”. Indianapolis police said his police vehicle and duty belt have been recovered. He’s been suspended pending his termination. A spokesman for Cincinnati police say he’s unlikely to face charges there.
