According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the woman, later identified as 20-year-old Jessica Arnold, walked into a fire station situated in northern Indianapolis with the dog and tire with her. She asked the firefighters to help rescue the distraught animal she had in her vehicle.
Around 5:15 p.m., a woman rang the doorbell of Station 5 located at 450 W 21 Street, and said she found the neighborhood stray dog stuck in the tire.
“The woman said the pit bull mix…is often seen in the area”, said IFD Capt. Rita L. Reith in an email.
So Arnold put the dog – and tire – in her auto and went to the local fire house.
A medial assessment made by the fire department at the time suggests that “the dog’s airway was never compromised and the dog appeared otherwise ok”.
Concerned fire crews first used liquid soap and oil to try to ease the dog’s head out of the tire, but neither of them worked. Neither attempt was successful. But it did not work, so they turned to electric tools normally used for extrication. This then allowed the rescuers to complete the job, taking them over an hour to get the rim removed.
The dog didn’t appear injured after the ordeal and was sent home with the woman who brought it in.
