IndyCar driver Justin Wilson dies after accident
“This is a monumentally sad day for IndyCar and the motorsports community as a whole”, Mark Miles, the CEO of IndyCar’s parent company Hulman & Co., said in a statement on Monday.
Justin Wilson will be buried in his native England, and the American service for the late IndyCar driver who resided in southwest Weld County will be in Indianapolis, his brother said Wednesday.
After Wheldon’s death, Wilson became one of three driver representatives to serve as a liaison between the competitors and IndyCar. He won it in 2005 and again in 2011, the 100th anniversary of the race.
Justin Wilson’s death was ruled an accident Tuesday morning by the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office, but an autopsy will still be done Wednesday to determine the cause, officials said. Andretti Auto Sport paid tribute to Wilson saying he was a tremendous racer and a valuable member of our team who was a respected representative to this sport.
“I am so devastated to hear of another passing of a great man and driver”.
He also leaves behind two daughters, who are aged seven and five. “We lost him yesterday, and it’s one of those tough questions that come up afterwards”.
NASCAR Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series teams will run decals this weekend honoring Wilson (The Sprint Cup Series is off). “#RIPJustin”. “Keep Julia & the girls in your prayers #myherojw”. “Racers race”. Wilson was airlifted to a hospital, where he never recovered, reports CBSN’s Jeff Glor.
Karam was also taken to the hospital for evaluation of a foot injury.
“IndyCar drivers are far more susceptible to head injuries because the cockpits are open and their helmets exposed”. A memorial from fans is growing at the entrance to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the gates at 16th and Georgetown. A year ago, IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe was left with a concussion when he was hit in the head by debris. “There is not a sanctioning body more concerned with safety than IndyCar”. Wilson’s vehicle then careened into the inside retaining wall.
