IndyCar Driver Justin Wilson In Coma After Pocono Crash
“I know my wife has already talked to Julia (Wilson) and everyone is kind of figuring out how they can help get everyone where they need to be and pray and hope for the best”. “I wish I could go see him”.
Karam was leading when his Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet spun on lap 179 of the 200 lap race.
What appeared to be a piece of the nose cone from Karam’s auto struck Wilson on the head as he drove to avoid the debris. The piece that hit Wilson appeared to be a section of nosecone and seemingly knocked the 37-year-old unconscious, causing him to crash into an inside wall.
Karam, from nearby Nazareth, Pa., was transported by ground to the same hospital for examination of a right foot injury.
Ryan-Hunter Reay, an Andretti teammate of Wilson’s, was the eventual race victor. Even he and his team seemed to struggle to care much, though.
He finished second in the championship in the next two seasons before Champ vehicle merged with the Indy Racing League in 2008. The race was marred by multiple crashes and over one quarter of the total distance was driven under the caution flag.
Verizon IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson remains in a coma and in critical condition Monday morning after a crash at Pocono Raceway Sunday night.
Race authorities described Wilson’s injuries as “severe”, and he was immediately extricated from the wreck and airlifted to hospital.
It also featured 33 lead changes and 12 different leaders. At one point, the field was seven-wide down the front-straight heading toward turn 1. It had been a very good race at a hard track in cars that are more of a chore to drive than widely believed, he said. “It was just some wonderful racing today and there were some super-fast race cars out there. But it got real racy at a lot of points”. The deal was put together right before the season-opening race in March and initially started as just a two-race agreement at Indianapolis.
Ryan Hunter-Reay won at Pocono on Sunday.
But pleasure turned into concern when Hunter-Reay learned of the severity of Wilson’s injury. “We kept going backwards in the pit stops, kept fighting our way to the front”. “We’re going to go to Sonoma in attack mode”. The race ended under caution after Chaves’ engine expired with three laps left. “It would have been nice to finish under green”. Will Power, who finished fourth, is 62 points in arrears, with fifth-place Helio Castroneves down 78 after finishing 16th. The win was Hunter-Reay’s second in three races in what has otherwise been a disappointing year for the 2012 series champion.
