‘Injured’ Hameed to miss remaining India Tests
Playing his first test in eight years, Parthiv Patel smashed an unbeaten 67 off 54 balls and the hosts chased down their 103-run victory target for the loss of Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara.
The Lancashire-born player won the hearts of many fans during his short India stay with Indian skipper Virat Kohli terming him “a future England star”.
India began day three on 271-6, 12 runs behind England’s first innings score of 283.
Kohli reciprocated in equal measure when he put a finger on his lips after Stokes lost his wicket in England’s second innings. But his 80-run stand with Jayant Yadav underpinned India s impressive lower-order performance.
Pujara, who scored 25 runs, perished after tea while attempting to sweep a Rashid delivery which was pitched a little outside leg-stump.
Before this game, the prevailing thought in the England team was to “win the toss, bat first and win a Test in India”.
Batty was trapped lbw by Ravindra Jadeja to the seventh ball of the day.
It was his third five-wicket haul in test cricket, and his first in the sub-continent.
This was after a courageous half-century by injured Haseeb Hameed helped England finish their second innings at 236.
It took a special reflex catch from Ajinkya Rahane to finally remove Root – the slip fielder sticking out his left hand to grasp a sharp chance and deliver a hammer-blow to English hopes just before the break.
Kohli started the England series in the 15th position, his 405 runs in three Tests so far has allowed the batsman to climb the rankings quickly.
England were already hurt by the absence of teenage opener Haseeb Hameed, who is in danger of missing the series with a hand injury and has yet to bat in this innings.
An heroic half century from Haseeb Hameed was the bright spot of an otherwise dark day for England as they succumbed to the inevitable in Mohali to go 2-0 down in the series.
Shami came up with another bouncer with another bouncer in his very ball which bounced into Woakes, hitting the handle before lobbing up for an easy catch to wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel. The 19-year-old, who misses the remaining two tests with the injury, remained unbeaten after almost three hours at the crease to enhance his burgeoning reputation.
But we have Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid to come. A ball earlier, Woakes was hit on the helmet.
The Roses alliance appeared to represent England’s last realistic chance of delaying India significantly, and Root completed a skilful and determined 147-ball half-century when he clipped Jadeja past midwicket for just his third boundary.
