Injury derails McIlroy defence
After rupturing a ligament in his left ankle while playing soccer, he said, McIlroy will have plenty more time for social media endeavors.
He said on his Twitter account he is taking a “long-term view of this injury” and that he wants to return to action only when he is “100% healthy and 100% competitive”.
“In 1994 I snapped my femur in half before the Masters skiing and I said then and feel the same way now that you can’t live your life in fear and caution“.
McIlroy was referring to tennis star Andy Murray, who won Wednesday to advance to the Wimbledon semifinals.
Knox has been given a place in the British Open, golfís oldest major tournament, after top-ranked Rory McIlroy withdrew Wednesday, July 8 because of a left ankle injury sustained while playing soccer with friends at the weekend. McIlroy posted a photograph on Instagram with his leg in a boot as he balanced on crutches.
McIlroy’s defence of the Bridgestone Invitational in a month’s time and the following week’s USA PGA Championship at Whistling Straits is also in serious jeopardy as he 26-year-old could face months on the sidelines.
With Jordan Spieth already hot on the Northern Irishman’s tail, McIlroy’s No. 1 ranking spot will now be under even more threat as the Texan makes his way to St Andrews on Monday looking for the third part of a calendar grand slam after Masters and USA Open victories earlier this year. Another distinction that makes the Open Championship much more exciting to watch is that the setup of courses is fairly consistent with how the courses were originally designed generations ago, with Mother Nature being the final determinant of how players will play the course.
Paul Lawrie, a ex- Open Champion, is always a good bet on home soil and showed glimpses of a return to form with a top-30 finish at the BWM Munich last week. I wasn’t expecting him to play in the Open, so I’m not surprised he’s pulled out.
“I am sure this will be a hugely memorable occasion for players and spectators alike”. With the fun rivalry going on and everything, he’s going to be gutted. “I played it on Saturday, and the first name that jumped into my mind was Rory (McIlroy), you have to say”.
Still to be determined is how long the ankle injury keeps McIlroy out of golf. McIlroy finished one shot out of a playoff when the PGA Championship was last held there in 2010. But I dont think he did anything wrong, it was just an unfortunate situation. It was around the hole where I got a hole-in-one in the Scottish Amateur here at Gullane back in 2004. “He is in the prime of his career and would have had a great chance”. Nobody wants to get in because someone got injured. The five-time major championship victor has not been charged with a crime and is not under federal investigation, according to the report.
