Injury Report: Wentz’s Ribs Still Not Healed
It was fun while it lasted, this love affair with Carson Wentz.
The Eagles drafted Wentz out of North Dakota State looking for their franchise quarterback of the future, but he’s a raw project who is unlikely to play much, if at all, in 2016. Bradford can sympathize with Wentz, and was hoping his teammate would get more work in before the end of the preseason.
Wentz has been out of action ever since suffering a rib injury towards the end of Philadelphia’s first preseason game on Thursday, Aug. 11. Daniel’s debut in an Eagles uniform in the preseason opener was not a banner performance, but he has looked better during the last two weeks.
Monday, it was revealed in a CT scan that while one rib is fully healed, another is at roughly ’60 percent.’ The number two overall pick will return to Eagles’ practice, but will not play in the team’s final preseason game Thursday night against the New York Jets.
His ribs have not healed yet and Carson says he will not play this week. Wentz went all in later on when he met with reporters in the locker room.
“Obviously, defenses are going to have to make a decision (when we go to three tight ends)”, quarterback Sam Bradford said.
Ready to be inactive, that is.
“Obviously, he will play and we will try to work him in just like all the other guys”, said Chase Daniel, who will start at quarterback Thursday.
“I feel confident with where I am”. Now, Bradford is healthy and Wentz isn’t.
“I definitely see both sides”, Daniel said.
“It’s going to be a long career”, said Wentz, a Bismarck Century High School graduate. “It’s a marathon, so I’m trying not to get too down about it”.
After Philly chose to trade five picks for the former North Dakota State signal caller, Wentz was dubbed the Eagles’ savior. And what exactly does that mean?
“You really just put yourself in the situation”, Wentz said. “You’re not the one out there making the plays, making the throws”. How would I read this? You just go with that because he has gotten plenty of reps in training camp. “Obviously, it’s not quite the same, but you’ve got to make the most with what you can”.
As for how far this might set him back, Pederson pointed to some of the positives he has seen from his rookie. “But, again, I go back to what I see in the classroom, what I see off the field and his work ethic here”. “The conversations are such that we’ve got to. just have a plan ready to go”.
“That (possibility) is something that we wrestle with every day”, Pederson said. “All the young receivers, including DGB, have done a really good job of stepping up and learning the offense and really showing that they can play and that they belong in this league”. “That’s the bottom line”.
Wentz looked sharp during warm-ups in Indianapolis on Saturday night.
Also, guard Isaac Seumalo (pectoral) is “day-to-day” with a pec issue.
Both Wentz and the coaching staff are confident the rookie will be prepared if something happens in the regular season.
“Wiz filled in wonderfully (and) got all the reps during the week”, Pederson said. “If there’s an opportunity to let McLeod play more, I’ll let him play more”. You want someone who’s going to stand firm there.
