Inmate Assaults Charleston Church Shooter in Jail
An inmate exited his cell, ran down the stairs and attacked Roof while he was showering, according to a Charleston County Sheriff’s office incident report.
Roof – who has been charged with 33 federal offenses – will face the death penalty for killing nine black parishioners in Charleston in June 2015. Roof is facing the death penalty for the homicides of nine people at the Emanuel AME Church in June 2015. Roof is being held in solitary confinement at the jail, the Post and Courier said.
He was just beaten by a fellow inmate while he was getting ready to take a shower. Both inmates were examined and cleared by the detention center’s medical staff. Roof is scheduled to remain in his original housing unit.
Officials were looking into a possible electronic malfunction as they began an investigation of how Stafford got through a cell door, which was supposed to be locked.
Deputies say 26-year-old Dwayne Stafford hit Roof in the head and body with his hands, leaving Roof with bruises. He said Stafford was able to access the protective custody unit and attack Roof with his fists because guards had violated security procedures.
Dwayne StaffordDylann Roof is generally unpopular among black Americans, and for good reason.
“This serves as a wake up call for all concerned, ” he said.
Stafford is African-American and is in jail on charges of providing false information to a police officer, strong-arm robbery and first-degree assault and battery. “We do things day-in and day-out and they become routine”. Roof also faces federal charges including hate crimes.
Cannon added that there was no proof that the reported attack by Stafford, who is black, was racially motivated, “beyond the obvious speculation that we would all have given the nature of the situation”, USA Today reported. His trial in state court will start on January 17, 2017.
According to a report from WCNC, Roof’s attorney’s are now challenging federal prosecutor’s intent to seek the death penalty for their client.
