Inmate who killed 2 was facing major charges
According to witnesses and WSJM Radio Station, the incident took place outside Judge Charles LaSata’s courtroom at the Berrien County Courthouse in St. Joseph. There were a few courageous bailiffs in the room, who were able to gain control of the situation, fatally shooting the inmate, as others ducked for cover.
That brings the number of law enforcement officers fatally shot by suspects while in the line of duty to 27, up from 16 a year ago. “All he wanted to do was get home to our baby girl”.
Two courthouse bailiffs in MI were shot dead Monday by a jail inmate who was being led to a courtroom, and took a handgun from one of the officers. “They were our colleagues”.
In 2011, Zangaro told The Herald-Palladium newspaper that security staff had a “ton of experience”, more than many police departments.
Zangaro was head of courthouse security and was employed with the court since May 2004, police say. Kienzle, a retired Benton Township police sergeant and U.S. Army veteran, had been a bailiff since 2005.
The courthouse would remain closed today.
“It just seems to me common sense that if you have somebody in court on a felony domestic violence charge you might want to have them in handcuffs”, Arney in St. Joseph, Mich., told Langton. During the altercation Gordon disarmed deputy James Atterberry Jr., the sheriff said. She said she was keeping his last name because its his daughter’s last name and they, as a family, had always been a team.
Golden ran into a public corridor, shot the woman and spent about five minutes in the courtroom area trying to take hostages before he ran through a door and was “taken down by other bailiffs who responded”, Bailey said. He was killed by other officers.
Two Court Bailiffs are dead, and a deputy and a civilian wounded but in fair condition after an inmate at the Berrien County Courthouse grabbed a deputy’s gun and opened fire Monday afternoon.
“One of the worst things is they made it through their career and were in a retirement job and, yeah, people view it as relatively safe, but they got killed after their career and that is one of the hardest things to accept”, said Keith Hafer, a retired patrol lieutenant with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Bailey says Gordon had not been handcuffed. Fred Upton, a MI state Republican and House Representative, gave a statement in which he called the gunman’s actions “horrific” adding that he hopes the death of the law enforcement officials involved will finally make people see that these public servants take a risk with their lives every single day, in order to serve and protect the public, never knowing what might come their way or if they will return home to their families when the night comes.
The courthouse is in St. Joseph, which is 100 miles northeast of Chicago. A female civilian was also shot in the arm before Gordon was killed by an officer, report WOOD and WZZM.
She spoke to him on 10 July, the day before the attack, and said she had no idea of his plans.
“State police secured the scene in St. Joseph, according to a tweet from Gov. Rick Snyder”.
