Insensitive comments cause Fox Sports to boot Emily Austen
Emily Austen, a contract sideline reporter for the Tampa Bay Rays and the Orlando Magic, will no longer appear in Fox Sports Sun broadcasts after appearing in a Facebook Live video where she made several racist comments, including one about Crockett High School valedictorian Mayte Lara.
During the telecast, (see below) Emily Austen nonchalantly rails off against Mexicans, Asians and even Jews, whom she described as being cheap and stingy along with dispiriting Mexicans where Austen at one stage flippantly remarks, ‘I didn’t even know Mexicans were that smart’.
Fox Sports Florida GM Steve Tello was quoted in a statement Friday that the network was aware of Austen’s “insensitive and derogatory comments”.
‘She was not speaking on behalf of FOX Sports, nor do we condone any of the statements she made in the video. She reflected on her time working as a server in Boca Raton, Florida and somehow deduced that Jewish people are stingy, poor tippers.
“They would complain and b– about everything”, she said. I gave a guy, delivered his beer, and he was complaining to me that there was too much head.
“I didn’t even know Mexicans were that smart”, Austen said candidly, causing two of the three men interviewing her to laugh.
The video was recorded using Facebook Live, which archives the video after the broadcast has concluded, but was deleted from Barstool’s Facebook page. This alone seemed like a very interesting move, considering as a sideline reporter for Fox Sports, she might find herself in the locker room with Love at some point in her career. Shortly after the video started making the rounds on the web, Fox announced she will not be appearing on any upcoming broadcasts. It’s important to acknowledge that the political climate – set by Donald Trump who has normalized racism and hate – is what makes people think they can get away with this kind of behavior. She is not employed by the team. But it was uploaded to Vimeo.
The show, which runs down viral topics was deleted from Facebook after airing but unfortunately for Emily Austen, the whole thing was saved by someone (can you guess why?) on the Barstool subreddit.
Anyway Austen has already been told by her employer she is done and likely will never work for them again.
