‘Inside Out’ celebrates edge over ‘Magic Mike,’ ‘Terminator’ – San Antonio
It’s the July 4th weekend, so everything should be rosy at the box office.
Calendar configuration didn’t scare off one of our openers, as Paramount chose to open the rebooted Terminator franchise this weekend.
Channing Tatum had his body hair groomed to a “high level” for “Magic Mike XXL”. The indie film, opening in six theaters in New York and Los Angeles, opened to $222,015 for a location average of $37,002, one of the top averages of all time for a documentary. “Terminator Genisys“, on the other hand, was made for about $155 million and appears headed for disappointment. The men, strippers from the 2012 film Magic Mike, return with a sequel – Magic Mike XXL – and they are back with a bang!
Megan Colligan, head of worldwide distribution for Paramount, said the weekend simply didn’t play like a holiday weekend.
She said: “I got to this convention with hundreds of women and there was a solidarity between us that I had never felt before”. Some of that does have to do with it is pretty severe competition. “Genisys“, which critics have slammed, is finding better business overseas. Inside Out won Friday with $12.5M and will finish the weekend with $30.04M. Channing Tatum’s title character “Magic” Mike Martingano was based on Tatum’s pre-stardom dance career. Longer-running “Spy” (20th Century Fox) and “San Andreas” (Warner Bros.) placed seventh and eighth with $2.2 and 1.1 million respectively. “We might be down but we’re not out”.
“I think for a while I’m going to try to make movies that, even if they don’t make a dollar, I’ll still be so proud to be a part of them that it won’t matter”. Tammy earned $21.6 million, and Deliver Us From Evil and Earth to Echo both earned less than $10 million. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Rentrak, told Variety that the new films faced a formidable challenge against “Inside Out” and “Jurassic World”. These extras were responsible for keeping the energy going – and, yes, tossing cash at the actors.
Meanwhile, “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out” maintained the top two spots at the box office.
While the Independence Day weekend is still anyone’s game, “Terminator” is in a dire position. The film tumbled a steep 67 percent to $11 million for a domestic total of $58.3 million.
