Intel Skylake CPUs continuously listen to the voice Windows 10 users
Let’s say you’re feeling particularly lazy and don’t want to walk over to your computer to wake it up.
Intel also unveiled a new bit of functionality called Speed Shift, which will allow its processors to intelligently determine what sort of power consumption is appropriate at any given time.
After a pair of leaks revealed most of the details about Intel’s upcoming Skylake processor lineup, the company today itself has teased a few of the features of the upcoming processors.
The question is, will people want this feature turned on by default?
On its own, this technology is useless but when paired with Cortana in Windows 10 it means that users will be able to wake their computer from sleep with their voices.
As he made the announcement, Skaugen held aloft laptops by EVGA and MSI that will feature the new chips. Once you wake your PC up, Cortana takes over and you can use all the standard commands.
At the Intel Developer Forum this week, Intel showed off two technologies, that, together, will help wake up your PC at the sound of your voice.
Intel hasn’t disclosed any info on how much extra power the always-on listening will consume, or whether computers will require special hardware (like dual microphones with beamforming support) to invoke the capability.
An always on mode was also seen on the first generation Motorola Moto X smartphone, which came with a suite of dedicated sensors and processors for voice commands.
Windows 10’s built-in assistant is the go-to voice-controlled interface in Microsoft’s operating system. A better setup would be a user with both features, Windows Hello and the option of using voice commands through Cortana.
