Intense wildfire burns in Grand Teton National Park

The proximity of the fire is reported to be between West Yellowstone, Montana, a town of about 1,300 situated just outside the park’s western boundaries, and Madison Junction, a recreational area that sits within the park’s confines.
A fire to the south of Yellowstone National Park burning in the in the Grand Teton National Park has forced the closure of the south entrance of Yellowstone park.
The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding area beginning at noon today.
Meanwhile, Flagg Ranch and the Lizard Creek and Headwaters campgrounds remain closed.
The road remained closed Tuesday as firefighters cleared debris and any burned trees that might pose a hazard, he said.
The fire is threatening the area of highway between Leeks Marina and the South entrance, thus the road has been closed. The largest of those blazes, known as the Yale Road Fire, grew to almost 3,500 acres on Monday, as crews struggled to suppress the flames that have so far destroyed 10 homes.
As of writing, Maple Fire has not crossed the West Entrance Road.

A wildfire on California’s central coast grew to almost 60 square miles Tuesday and destroyed nine more homes, bringing the total to 45.
At least 2,400 people are under evacuation orders in San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties.
By midday Tuesday, authorities said the castle – the early 20th-century home of publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst – was no longer in danger, after a wind shift pushed the blaze away from the facility. Several other nearby communities have been under evacuation orders for days.
Johnson added firefighters are also busy battling the three smaller fires that have swept across the area.
Eighty miles up the coast, California’s biggest fire has burned through almost 135 square miles of timber and brush in rugged terrain along coastal Highway 1 north of Big Sur.

The Buffalo fire in Tatanka Complex about 3 miles northeast of Tower Junction has simmered a bit and is now being managed via monitoring and so-called point-protection strategies.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Although there are approximately 75 structures within a quarter mile of the fire’s edge, no buildings are threatened at this time.
Authorities ordered evacuations east of Thompson Falls after a fire doubled in size to almost 11 square miles.
A fast-moving rangeland wildfire in eastern Idaho expanded to almost 70 square miles Wednesday, forcing evacuations, threatening a windfarm and burning habitat needed by sage grouse.

Spokesman Brian Steiger says the fire is 35 percent contained after destroying 36 homes and 16 other buildings.
Elsewhere, a 48½-square-mile blaze on national forest lands west of Unity was 40 percent surrounded. The fire had blackened less than one square mile and the cause was unknown.
Shayne Ward of the Utah Division of Forestry says the southern Utah fire had grown to almost five square miles. It was ignited Saturday when a car’s broken catalytic converter sent hot debris into grassy rangeland.
Meanwhile almost 1,900 homes are threatened by a wildfire on California’s central coast that grew slightly overnight to almost 58 square miles.
