International aid to Syrians ‘utterly inadequate’: Oxfam
Like all refugees in Jordan, he is not allowed to work legally.
“The violence in Syria is intensifying, fueled by a divided worldwide community and the transfer of arms and ammunition to warring parties”, Andy Baker, head of Oxfam’s Syria crisis response, in a statement accompanying its new report (pdf).
The increase in voluntary repatriation comes as food assistance to Syrian refugees in Jordan is being drastically cut. “Syria’s neighboring countries have been coping with this crisis alone for too long”.
More than 1 million people have been wounded and 250,000 killed in Syria since the civil war began four years ago. These benefits are even greater when rich countries, especially those with declining populations, take in refugees.
What are the consequences of a 56 percent shortfall in aid when the lives of families are at stake?
“We follow the traffickers and want to arrest them and seize their ships”, the captain said, adding that he’ll get as close to Libyan waters as he can. Recent aid cuts by underfunded agencies, particularly the World Food Program, have been devastating.
As in Syria, the impact of such a shortfall has been profound, forcing desperate refugees to risk the journey to Europe in hope of a better life.
“But probably the larger thing is the intent expressed by ISIL and others to say we need to get people in this chain”. A political refugee who found asylum in Sweden, Aldjail sought asylum from Russia several times after graduating from the Russian University for People’s Friendship, but did not receive it. The Obama administration’s plan is to take in 10,000 more next year, but even that modest intention is caught up in a political debate over the fear that the Syrians could present a security threat. A primary conduit for Syrian refugees to gain access to Canada is through private sponsorships.
The violence has continued unabated. I know that Aylan’s family’s tragedy is one devastating story among so many. In the short term it would be helpful for countries, such as the United States and those in the European Union, to take in more Syrian refugees in, but ultimately this will not end the Syrian crisis.
Destruction during the Syrian Civil War. It is because of this that the United States must put pressure on the Saudis and other Gulf countries to accept more Syrians.
Oxfam is calling for a complete halt to all the transfers.
The photo of little Alan was published on the front page of the Star and other newspapers around the world on September 3, igniting an avalanche of support for the millions of people fleeing war-torn Syria in the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War.
As in the past, it has taken the photograph of one child to touch people and move them to action. “They have also failed to provide safe and legal routes for Syrians to their territory, including not doing enough to ensure that vulnerable refugees are offered resettlement and other forms of humanitarian admission in sufficient numbers”.
