IOS 9’s Wi-Fi Assist could be burning your monthly data

This isn’t turned on by default, so you don’t need to worry about accidentally downloading a massive file on your mobile data.

The iPhone will automatically detect when a Wi-Fi signal is struggling, and switch over to your 3G or 4G mobile connection.

It’s called Wi-Fi Assist, and most Android devices have had this for a couple of years under slightly different names such as Download Booster on Samsung Galaxy devices.

Some people online have reported having their mobile data allocations chewed through far faster than normal, and that can naturally come as a surprise – especially if you didn’t know the feature existed and you thought you were safely using Wi-Fi connectivity. Apple has again up-to-date their own application, which suggests fantastic new capabilities. Details below.

If you have recently updated the software on your iPhone, there is a small but worrying chance you’ll have some nasty surprises next phone bill. For most of us, this home internet connection allows us to consume plenty of data – you can presumably watch ABC iView, Skype call the kids or stream a YouTube video without worrying too much about running over quota. Users who are inadvertently using extra data due to this feature can simply head over to Settings Cellular and then scroll down to turn off Wi-Fi Assist.

Quite why it is listed so low I don’t know, but there it is.

All you have to do to turn it off is go into your phone’s settings and click “Wallet & Apple Pay.”
