Iowa poll: Sanders maintains slim lead over Clinton
“We both received the same information, and we both arrived at different conclusions”, Sanders said after meeting in the Oval Office with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. His meeting with Obama was the first time the former Senate colleagues have held a substantive discussion since Sanders’ candidacy began surging in early voting states, a come-from-behind boost that some have compared to Obama’s own race against Clinton in 2008.
With less than a week until Iowa’s February 1 caucuses, a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday morning showed Sanders with 49 percent and Clinton with 45 percent.
“She would go into the White House being ahead of other candidates”, she said. The Clintons say Sanders’ call for a single-payer universal health care system is unrealistic.
Clinton also spoke to AOL.com about how surprised she has been to meet many people who are still frustrated at the economy and stagnant incomes. I mean, we’ve got the 15th Amendment, technically, our Constitution allowing blacks to vote after the Civil War.
Stressing that the Iowa caucuses “are all about turnout”, Brown noted that the Vermont senator could pose a serious threat for the Democratic presidential nomination if his supporters turnout.
“We’re feeling really good about where we are” but not saying he can repeat Obama in 2008. Aides to Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders did not immediately respond to questions.
But the presidential invite is perhaps a sign of Sanders’ growing popularity, despite failing to hog the headlines.
“I think he and the Vice-President have tried to be fair and even-handed in the process, and I expect they will continue to do that”, Mr. Sanders said after the meeting, which took place two days after some comments by Mr. Obama were widely interpreted as his preference for Ms. Clinton. More than 8 in 10 voters say that they have finalized their decisions, while less than one-fifth may still change their minds. It is the second time they have met privately in the previous year or so. A White House spokeswoman suggested no photos are expected.
The long-discussed meeting between Obama and his sometime critic was a moment for the president to display his public neutrality in the heated primary race to replace him – rebutting suggestions that he’s in the tank for Clinton. She has more congressional and gubernatorial support than any candidate running on either side of the aisle. But I will tell you that in the last couple of months we have gained a whole lot of ground and, again, I think we stand a real chance to create a large voter turnout. I would love to see us do that.
He said he believes Obama has been “even handed” in his dealing with the candidates.
