Iowa State at Texas Tech
Texas Tech sophomore QB Patrick Mahomes was 33-of-46 passing for 428 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in Saturday’s win against Iowa State.
Much like a “shut down inning” in baseball, the Red Raiders defense stood up following the Jakeem Grant touchdown, forcing an Iowa State three and out on the Cyclones third offensive series.
But those two weren’t the only ones getting to stretch their legs in play, The Red Raider offense would see from all three quarterbacks including red-shirt sophomore Nic Shimonek.
Texas Tech looks to rebound from back-to-back losses to top-five teams when the Red Raiders take on Iowa State on Saturday.
Redshirt freshman Mike Warren had his third straight game of more than 100 yards for the Cyclones (2-3, 1-1), finishing with a career-high 245 yards on 23 carries.
Warren is the first Cyclone back to eclipse 200 rushing yards since Ennis Haywood in 2001 and already has established a single-season freshman record with 574 yards this season. He caught TD passes of 75 and 37 yards for Texas Tech (4-2, 1-2).
This might be the best Big 12 game of the week. “We’d made big strides in those areas, the penalties and turnovers, so to play such a good team and then revert back to that was disappointing”. But if we protect the ball, we’ll be in every game. Texas Tech is 10-3 against Iowa State, including wins in each of the last three seasons.2. The Red Raiders second touchdown came on the first play of a drive when Mahomes found Grant at the Texas Tech’s own 40.
Rhoads put Joel Lanning in at quarterback late in the game, but said it was just to get him a few meaningful reps. “We’ve got to let him know we’re there and at least cause his feet to shuffle a little bit, and maybe have him hold onto the ball a little longer”, he said.
Richardson completed 10 of 21 passes for 139 yards and Lanning hit on 5 of 9 passes for 41.
On the first play of the second quarter, Sam Richardson would again find Quenton Bundrage on a 36 yard pass and catch that left the Cyclones sittin’ pretty at the one yard line.
