IPhone 8 Launches, Keeps Touch ID Alive

Apple’s latest and greatest smartphones land in stores today with the device packed with new features and upgrades.

The special edition iPhone X is the first iPhone to feature an edge-to-edge screen and facial recognition technology.

Apple’s iPhone X, which is available for pre-order beginning October 27, includes a new feature called Face ID, which uses facial recognition software to allow the user to unlock the device. Employees cheered and did the “wave” and Cook, beaming, played along. Lines for the newest version on Friday, though, appeared to be a bit lighter. After opening the smartphone, iFixit’s team discovered that the handset looks strikingly similar to its predecessor, the iPhone 7. Both the new iPhone models also support Qi wireless inductive charging, allowing people charge the iPhone without having to plug in a cable again, Phil Schiller, Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Marketing said. The phones will also be available for pre-booking from various authorised Apple Resellers across the country.

Outside of NY, enthusiasm fell far short of previous debuts.

About 50 people were seen at a store in Sydney. Many said that consumers are holding off for the release of the premium iPhone X anticipated to debut in early November.
