IPhone 8 might miss out on curved screen after all
So it looks like the iPhone 8 won’t be as cool as we thought it might be.
According to recent reports, the iPhone 8 will stick to the series’ flat screen display despite previous rumors suggesting that it will sport a new design.
Rumors of iPhone 8 coming with 2.5D cover glass first surfaced when TrendForce, a Chinese research firm and Ming-Chi Kuo analyst at KGI Securities predicted the same. Using a flat OLED display will cost considerably less according to Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate. But the prospect of having an OLED display on Apple’s smartphone is exciting, nonetheless.
Apple has allegedly assigned a new name for the highly anticipated iPhone 8.
Apple has stuck with conventional IPS LCD panels over the years, and it has allowed rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy S-series to overtake the quality of the Cupertino-based tech giant’s displays significantly. One of these was a curved OLED screen, similar to what we’ve seen from Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge.
Lam also expects a tweaked aspect ratio on the OLED iPhone (the ratio of the display’s width to the height) to “take advantage of higher [display] coverage area of the device”.
Apple’s long-awaited iPhone 8, also known as the iPhone Edition, has always been rumoured to feature a curved screen OLED display along the same lines as Samsung’s Galaxy S7. The iPhone Edition, however, will be shipped much later than the other two smartphones.
If you were hoping for a cool new curved OLED display screen on your iPhone 8, you may be left disappointed. One well-known analyst thinks the iPhone 8 will be just the thing, and another says Apple needs China sales to grow in fiscal 2018 if it’s going to post strong iPhone unit growth for the year.
To be fair, Lam acknowledged that he has no direct knowledge of Apple’s plans, and since the company is exceedingly secretive, take any claim about its next iPhone with the proverbial grain of salt. As Science Times published, the function bar will be ideal for this particular iPhone because it’s expected that the iPhone 8 will be exceptionally slim; slimmer than anything in the market today.
We’re also looking at wireless charging support, and a glass back, too. Features such as special cameras for 3D images as well as wireless charging will also be seen on the upcoming Apple iPhone Edition. The iPhone 8/iPhone Edition’s 3D Selfie Camera is rumored to be used in conjunction with the device’s facial recognition software, which is set to debut in the upcoming device.
