Iran denies Russian missiles crashed in country
U.S. officials did not say where in Iran the missiles might have landed.
Moscow said on Wednesday its warships fired a barrage of missiles at Syrian targets from the Caspian Sea, passing a distance of nearly 900 miles over Iran and Iraq to reach their targets.
Kirby wouldn’t discuss reports of Russian cruise missiles landing in Iran, but said such evidence would only reinforce the need for the us, Russia and others to “deconflict” their various military efforts in Syria.
It comes amid a wave of Russian airstrikes and a ground offensive by the Syrian army in the country’s central region.
The USA secretary of state, John Kerry, had a 30-minute telephone call with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, to express concern that Russia’s targets in Syria were not related to Islamic State.
“Now the Russian air strikes have ground support”, said Bilal.
Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Syria Observatory for Human Rights, said Islamic State forces had taken over villages including Tel Suseen and Tel Qarah from other rebels groups just outside the city.
Russia’s defence ministry denied a claim by a United States official Thursday that four Syria-bound Russian cruise missiles fired from the Caspian Sea had crashed in Iran.
This show of cooperation belies a strong sense of distrust between the two countries, with the U.S. and its allies accusing Russian Federation of targeting forces seeking to topple Assad, whom the US-led coalition opposes.
Russian planes last weekend crossed into Turkish airspace, triggering an immediate protest from Turkey and a vow from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation that it will defend its member nation.
Meanwhile, a senior Gulf official told the BBC that he fears that Russia’s military intervention in Syria will trigger a new jihad, or “holy war”, repeating Russia’s disastrous experience in Afghanistan in the 1980s. Further advances could mean rebels, including many characterised as “moderate” by the West, become sealed inside the besieged city by a circle of regime and Isil fighters.
“Brig. Gen. Hamedani was martyred by Daesh terrorists during an advisory mission in the suburb of Aleppo” on Thursday afternoon, said the statement read on IRNA, using the Arabic name for the Islamic State. In remarks broadcast by Syrian state-run TV, he said Syrian forces have started a massive offensive to wipe out militant groups and retake unspecified areas under their control.
