Iran expects final IAEA nuclear report on Friday: Fars
A key juncture over the implementation of the deal was an acknowledgement by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it would close the so-called case on the possible military dimensions (PMD) of Iran’s nuclear energy program.
“The IAEA will issue its final report on Friday to confirm Iran has met its commitments under the JCPOA (nuclear deal)”, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency.
Under the landmark nuclear deal that commits Tehran to significant limits on its nuclear activities for over a decade in exchange for relief from crippling economic sanctions, Iran must redesign the Arak reactor so it can’t produce plutonium for nuclear weapons – though it will still produce small amounts of plutonium and heavy water. The IAEA must verify that Iran has fulfilled all its obligations.
Seif said the money could be made available to the CBI as early as next week.
“Our expectation is that (the report would be submitted) at some point either right at the end of this week or at some point next week”, he said.
Iran has for years been building a heavy-water nuclear facility at Arak, the spent fuel from which would contain plutonium suitable for a nuclear bomb. Iran has already shipped most of its enriched uranium stockpile to Russian Federation, and must still mothball most of its centrifuges and decommission the Arak reactor.
Iran has removed the calandria, or central vessel, of its nuclear reactor at Arak, and it will be filled with concrete within hours, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday. Separately, the European Union’s foreign policy chief said that EU nuclear-related sanctions on Iran could be lifted soon.
“The technical work under way is very demanding, but the Atomic Energy Agency of Iran has been trying to do it as fast as possible”, Behrouz Kamalvandi was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency.
He said that the unfrozen assets will be handed over to CBI immediately after the implementation of Iran nuclear deal – widely known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
