Iran launches new ballistic missile
Rouhani addressed Friday’s parade in Tehran, noting that Tehran would not halt its missile program and would continue to boost military capabilities, despite United States threats to scrap the landmark 2015 agreement that capped Iran’s nuclear activities in return for the lifting of worldwide sanctions on Iran.
The missile weighs more than 1 ton which can carry several warheads by the range of 1800 kilometers.
At Friday’s military parade, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hit out at those who “create problems for the peoples of our region every day and boast of selling arms to the bloodthirsty Zionist regime [Israel], which has been attacking the peoples of our region for 70 years like a cancerous tumor”. The missile is named as Khorramshahr and was displayed in Tehran today in front of local media and thousands of spectators.
Rouhani called Trump’s “ignorant, absurd and hateful rhetoric” about Iran unfit to be heard at the United Nations.
Upon his return from New York, Rouhani strongly defended Iran’s right to self-defense. “We will defend the downtrodden people of Yemen, Syria, and Palestine whether you like it or not”, Rouhani added. We will strengthen our missile capabilities.
“We need nobody’s permission to defend our territories”, he said.
Iranian officials say their country has the necessary technology to expand the reach of its missiles, for the moment, limited to 2000 km.
Iran expert Sanam Vakil, an associate fellow with the UK’s Chatham House, said that Rouhani was playing to both the worldwide and domestic audience.
It comes after the USA announced fresh sanctions on Iran in July over its ballistic missile programme and what it claimed was the country’s support for terror organisations. Iran casts itself as a leading advocate for the rights of Palestinians. The agency did not provide further information on the missile. In a speech before congress in 2015, he described it as a “very bad deal” that “could well threaten the survival of my country”.
The Khorramshahr is capable of carrying multiple warheads, according to Brig.
Iran has successfully launched a ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 km, in strong retaliation against Trump’s anti-Iran remarks in UN General Assembly.
The Khoramshahr missile is a new ballistic weapon with a range of 2,000km (1,200 miles).
Rouhani has stated that this Trump government is looking to get “an excuse” to get out from the landmark 2015- nuclear arrangement which topped Iran’s atomic activities in substitution for the lifting of worldwide actions against Iran.
