Iran’s Rouhani: US headed into isolation after United Nations meeting
“So true”, Trump said, and more laughter broke out.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to paint a grim picture of the state of the world when leaders open their annual meeting on Tuesday, spotlighting the breakdown of trust around the globe and the need to counter unilateralism and reinvigorate worldwide cooperation which is the foundation of the United Nations.
If Trump puts the spotlight exclusively on Tehran’s malignant activities, that could trigger a United Nations rule allowing Iran’s president, Hassan Rouhani, to respond.
Trump also touched on the International Criminal Court, which has come under fire from national security adviser John Bolton for being “contrary to American principles”.
President Donald Trump was a laughingstock as he addressed the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly.
On Wednesday, while hosting a meeting on non-proliferation, Trump added a warning. Anyone failing to comply with the U.S. “would face severe consequences”, he warned.
Rouhani rebuked the Trump administration for withdrawing from the controversial Iran nuclear deal struck by former U.S. President Barack Obama’s government, a move that has reimposed hard-hitting sanctions against Tehran lifted under the agreement.
During discussions of Russian meddling, Trump has long argued that other countries might have also meddled, including China, or that Russia might not have interfered at all. But he said Trump administration officials “speak with a different style, presumably because they’re new to politics”. “This can not be continued”, he said. “The Americans are alone and isolated”.
“What Iran says is clear: no war, no sanctions, no threats, no bullying; just acting according to the law and the fulfilment of obligations”, Rouhani said.
Rouhani also accused the Trump administration of trying to topple his regime.
KELEMEN: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has criticized the Europeans for this. “What he said was not diplomatic at all”.
“I don’t think anybody knows it was Russian Federation that broke into the DNC”, he said during the first presidential debate with Hillary Clinton in 2016. “If we do not increase our collective efforts to preserve and build on what we have, there is a very real risk these gains will subside or fall away”.
On other tense subjects, Trump’s criticism of Germany’s pursuit of a direct energy pipeline from Russian Federation drew a dismissive headshake from a member of the US ally’s delegation, and his mention of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar all in one breath was received with stone-faced expressions by Saudi officials.
He adds: “I want a plan that’s solid, understood by both sides, really semi-agreed by both sides before we present”. On Monday, the EU, China and Russian Federation, all of which remain signatories to the deal, announced a mechanism to help Iran continue to engage in worldwide trade and avoid U.S. efforts to cut off Tehran’s financial flows. “And we ask all nations to support Iran’s people as they struggle to reclaim their religious and righteous destiny”. “We only ask that you honor our sovereign rights in return”.
Tensions have soared between Beijing and Washington after Mr Trump this week slapped new tariffs covering $200 billion in Chinese goods exported to the United States.
