Iran Sanctions Relief to Initially Benefit US Oil, Finance Sectors – Lawyer
While far from ideal, this bipartisan legislation gave Congress a vital say in whether this Iran deal goes forward.
EU and US leaders have said the Iran deal paves the way for broad co-operation with the Islamic Republic, widening their differences with the Israeli government.
The administration’s attempts to sell a bad deal with Iran to the United States public has gone desperate. In fact, such was the urgency behind agreeing on a deal that John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, had to stay on location and hammer things out even after he broke his leg in a cycling accident mid-negotiations. This is both a tremendous accomplishment and testament to the seriousness with which the United States approached sanctions relief.
“After eight years, under this agreement, the Iranians will be able to begin building and stockpiling more than 200 advanced centrifuges a year”, Hatch said, also noting that the embargo on ballistic missiles would be lifted under the terms of the agreement. Firstly, signing the deal does not mean that Iran can never produce a nuclear weapon. Decades of sanctions have ended up hurting the local populace and, as a result, moderate elements within the Iranian political setup were ushered into power through popular mandate so that some damage control could be initiated.
The Iranians need a deal because without one, the mullahs face more years of debilitating sanctions, nonexistent economic growth, and a brain drain among their youth. It’s NOT a good idea to allow interference in the US legislative process by other nations, such as Israel, Saudi Arabia, and some of the Gulf States, or by their lobbyists.
Maersk will likely be looking to invest in Iran through its four primary business interests: container transport (Maersk Line), port operations (APM Terminals) oil drilling and transport (Maersk Oil) and oil rig operations (Maersk Drilling).
Iran will have the cash to pay for them.
What is entirely missed is that the Middle East is a war over philosophy, not weapons.
The Iranians may be convenient allies as enemies of our enemies today, but not for one second have Iran’s rulers suggested their ultimate intent is anything other than the all too familiar “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” propaganda seen for the past 36 years. As a number of critics have pointed out, the Iran deal may be unconstitutional, violate global law and feature commitments that President Obama could not otherwise lawfully make.
In defense of Obama’s approach, the deal’s supporters point out that the Iranians are a “proud, nationalistic people”, which is undoubtedly true, but irrelevant, just as it was for the leadership of Germany’s Third Reich.
