Irish stars shine in nominations for Golden Globes
This year’s Golden Globe nominations have the streaming leader Netflix dominating, as the New York Times reports here.
Though actors have earned Golden Globes and Oscars for reprising a role – Peter O’Toole won the Golden Globe for his performance as Henry II in 1964’s “Beckett” and 1968’s “The Lion in Winter”, Stallone is the only one who has waited four decades to return to the nomination circle.
Nominees for the best musical or comedy prize are “Joy”, “The Martian”, “The Big Short“, “Spy“, and “Trainwreck”.
“The Big Short” co-stars Christian Bale and Steve Carell along with Damon (The Martian), Al Pacino (Danny Collins), Mark Ruffalo (Infinitely Polar Bear) are vying for a Golden Globe in the best actor – musical or comedy category.
“Spotlight“, an Oscar best picture front-runner, earned three top Golden Globe nods for best drama, director and screenplay.
VOD favorites favorites, and past Golden Globe winners, such as Transparent, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards once again claimed high-profile nods from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. “Any nominations for this film are an acknowledgement of them, their hard work and great passion”, he told ABC in a statement.
As far as being a bellwether for the Oscars, the most closely watched race is the best drama picture category.
Carol, the story of a married older woman who falls in love with a young shopgirl in the 1950s, will contend for best drama opposite Pioneer-era movie The Revenant, psychological thriller Room, Catholic Church abuse probe Spotlight and action thriller Mad Max: Fury Road.
In the feature film category, Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation received a nod for best lead actor in a drama (Idris Elba).
“Veep” earned nomination in the best television series? musical or comedy, and the best actress category for Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Premium rival Showtime suffered a falloff, too, with last year’s nine nominations shrinking to three.
Carol, Spotlight, The Martian, The Revenant, and Room will probably make out well when the Oscar nominations are announced January 14. The Big Short got a dose of good news, and the Steve Jobs actors have been singled out for their performances since the movie’s release in early October. The nominees for best motion picture drama: “Carol, ” “Mad Max: Fury Road, ” “The Revenant, ” “Room“, and “Spotlight”.
On the film side, “Carol” led the way with five nominations, and, in a surprise twist, stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara will go head-to-head in the best actress category.
