IRS scam hits the LC Valley, scammers make threatening phone calls
This is all part of their plan to convince you that their call is official. If they exert pressure about giving up personal information – like a credit card or Social Security number – it’s likely a scam.
In Michigan, one consumer reported to the AARP Fraud Watch Network that a scammer even called her mother late previous year claiming that her cell phone service would be shut off if she did not pay immediately.
Two people in the Detroit metro area were the victims of an IRS scam in which they were swindled out of thousands of dollars.
Scammers claiming to be IRS employees are contacting Suffolk County residents and police are warning the public to be vigilant. If the complaint involves someone impersonating the IRS, include the words “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes. The callers say an individual owes money and must pay now. They’ll also demand payment by phone, by pre-paid debit card, wire transfer, or credit card. Those who suspect they’ve received fraudulent emails should visit IRS.gov and search for “report phishing” to report it.
If the IRS calls, hang-up.
Threaten to bring in police or other agencies to arrest you for not paying.
“Don’t give out personal information to anyone, including computer access, or anything else”, said Hayden. And report the call to the local authorities.
Residents are advised to use the online reporting at the IRS website instead of calling the dispatch center.

The IRS recommends donating to recognizable, well-known charities and being tired of charities that use names similar to nationally known organizations.
