IS acknowledges death of ‘Jihadi John’ in magazine
Jihadi John, whose real name is Mohammed Emwazi, featured in multiple Islamic State videos showing beheadings of British and American hostages.
A eulogy for the member of the militant group – who was identified as Mohammed Emwazi – has been released. Analysts said it did not appear that the attacks were retribution for the strike against Emwazi.
In November, Army Col. Steve Warren, spokesperson for the U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS known as the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve, said a US airstrike “hit its intended target and the personnel on the receiving end…were in fact killed”.
It described him as an “honourable brother” known for his “mercy and generosity” who once gave away a mistress as a gift “to an unmarried injured brother”.
Emwazi later appeared in several other videos of beheadings, including those of British aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning.
Emwazi was last seen in the video showing Goto’s execution in January.
Islamic State said he died “as the vehicle he was in was targeted in a strike by an unmanned drone in the city of Raqqa, destroying the auto and killing him instantly”.
