Is Dana White going to make us wait for McGregor-Diaz rematch?
The event was the first under the new WME-IMG ownership, who purchased the UFC brand for more than $4 billion in the largest transaction for a single franchise in sports history.
Conor McGregor got revenge for an earlier defeat when he outscored arch enemy Nate Diaz in a thrilling rematch in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
The Headline fight between Diaz and McGregor not only took the “Fight of the Night” award, but also saw record-breaking purses for both fighters, McGregor earning approximately $3 million to Diaz’s $2 million.
Judges Derek Cleary and Jeff Mullen scored the rematch 48-47 for McGregor, and judge Glenn Trowbridge had it a draw, 47-47. “That’s how I feel about the whole fight, the whole situation”.
The fact is that the pre-fight hype around the weigh-ins and press conferences this week now looks a little contrived, as both men hugged it out after the fight.
Nearly immediately, both combatants started talking rubber match. “He’s running around the Showtime offices begging those executives to come up with a $100 million cash to fight me”.
“I’ve got to talk”. McGregor said. “If you want this trilogy, it’s on my terms”.
“I don’t think they’ll do that”.
“I’m coming for you Daniel”, Johnson said, speaking to current light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, who was seated near the cage. “Come back down to 155 and we’ll do it”. But if not, the reigning lightweight champ will be ready and willing to take on McGregor at 155 pounds. He stayed on the outside, keeping Diaz on his back foot with well placed leg kicks and entering but not overcommitting with his signature left hand.
That said, UFC President Dana White flatly stated in June the bout “ain’t happening”.
“Conor has to defend his title or make a decision to give it up or whatever he wants to do”, White said. “So I don’t know, we’ll see”.
Diaz did say after the fight he thought that he did enough to win, but he was not his usual bombastic self.
It appeared as though that training wasn’t helping around the third round when McGregor started to lose some steam, but he got a second wind and came out guns blazing in the fourth round.
After singing Diaz’s praises, McGregor went right back to hype mode.
